A vehicle crashed in Mill Pond Saturday morning after striking the railing of a bridge near exit three on Route 25 eastbound and going over the side, according to officials on the scene.
Officials said the condition of the vehicle’s one occupant is unknown and the individual has not been recovered. The vehicle is still in the water.
Emergency services received a call for the accident around 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 and soon after, the Wareham Police and Fire Departments as well as Massachusetts State Police and the Wareham Department of Natural Resources, responded to the scene.
Around 10:30 a.m. a special taskforce of divers organized by Wareham police entered the water. State Police divers arrived at the scene soon after. Divers exited the water around 11:15 a.m.
Natural Resource Officer, Ryan Mayo, said the search is ongoing.
Officials placed booms in the water to collect oil leaking from the vehicle and closed two lanes of Route 25 east shortly after exit three to accommodate emergency vehicles.
Mayo said the recovery process is ongoing.
“They’re still working on it now. It's going to be a little bit, but they’ll be here as long as they need to be,” Mayo said.
