MARTIN COUNTY, Texas — A man has died after veering off a roadway in Martin County and striking a oil storage tank that would then catch on fire, according to Sergeant Steven Blanco with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Blanco said the crash was believed to have occurred at 1 a.m. on Thursday, but the scene was not discovered until the afternoon of the following day.
Preliminary information revealed that Gavin Stone Popowitz, 27, from Houston, was driving a Buick Encore on County Road 3200, four miles west of Farm-to-Market 1212 "at a high rate of speed."
Blanco said Popowitz then veered off the roadway, rolled over and struck a oil storage tank that would then catch on fire.
Popowitz died at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
