St. Charles Health System was fined $13,363 for several violations during an inspection of a underground fuel tank at it's Redmond location.

The health system was fined for failing to have adequate release detection equipment on the piping for the tank serving emergency generations and boilers, failing to conduct annual line tightness testing and for failing to test over a three-year period the spill prevention and overfill prevention equipment, according to a public document on file with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

The tanks hold about 40,000 gallons of diesel fuel to power the emergency generators and boilers, according to the document. The testing and equipment is necessary to ensure that any fuel release is discovered quickly, according to the DEQ.

"If a leak goes unnoticed due to unmaintained release detection equipment, the leaking fuel can have lasting harmful effects on the environment or human health," the agency said.

The health system also must submit proof that it installed line leak detectors for the underground tanks, completed a line tightness test and tested the spill and overfill prevention equipment.
