There was a first on the campus of Haywood Community College Thursday, June 13, as it hosted its inaugural charity disc golf tournament, called Discs in the Dogwoods.

It's fashioned like a golf tournament with 18 holes around the perimeter of the campus.

To support the HCC Foundation, entry fees included a donation to the Haywood Strong Scholarship, which supports workers and their families impacted by the closure of Canton's paper mill last year.

“This is our last effort for this year to raise funds for Haywood Strong, which helps all the displaced mill workers -- have them come back to college -- whether it's curriculum or continuing education -- and just add to that scholarship for Haywood Strong,” said Hylah Birenbaum, HCC Foundation executive director of college advancement.

Birenbaum said this event will raise about $2,000 plus sponsor contributions.

She said the hope is to turn the disc golf tournament into an annual event.
