Technology provider Kongsberg Maritime has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the classification society DNV for its next-generation 2,000 TEU container feeder vessel design.

The new design, named ‘Cobalt Blue,’ introduces a range of new features tailored to the container feeder market. One of the key highlights is its open-top deck for improved cargo handling, as well as a forward deckhouse and a modular design that allows for easy upgrades. The open-top configuration eliminates the need for heavy cargo hatches, while the forward deckhouse will help protect the cargo from green water coming onto the ship. An active stabilizer system with intelligent weather routing and steering will help to minimize the risk of cargo loss.

The vessel will feature a dual-fuel main engine, capable of running on either LNG or diesel fuels. However, it is designed to seamlessly switch between different fuel types — like biogas, synthetic methane, or ammonia — to align with the industry's evolving sustainability requirements and stricter emissions standards.

"We’re delighted to have received Approval in Principle for this innovative design that can offer owners a truly future-proofed vessel in the container feeder market," said Oskar Levander, Kongsberg Maritime's SVP, Business Concepts, who added that he see "no major obstacles" to the vessels’ realization.

"Furthermore, it can transition onto green ammonia fuel with a small pre-planned conversion to allow for zero carbon operation. The vessel can easily be reconfigured to accommodate the additional tanks required for alternative fuels and there can also be room for battery containers to enable emission-free operation close to port," Levander added.

The vessel was designed in collaboration with Deltamarin.
