International Paper scheduled to close Georgetown Pulp and Paper Mill

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD) – International Paper has announced the permanent closing of its Georgetown Pulp and Paper Mill, expected to impact 600-700 workers.

Officials say the mill will shut down in stages with full closure expected by the end of 2024.

“The decision is especially difficult because of the impact on hardworking employees, their families and the surrounding communities,” said Bernie Chascin, Georgetown Mill manager, International Paper.

‘Loss is devastating’: Georgetown officials address mill closure

International Paper says 526 hourly employees and 148 salaried employees will be impacted in total by the closure of the mill. All employees will be offered severance benefits, outplacement services and access to mental resources.

International Paper is a global producer of sustainable packaging, pulp, and other fiber-based products. The Georgetown mill produces approximately 300,000 tons of fluff pulp designed for incontinence products such as diapers and other absorbent items.

The mill also produces freesheet papers that it sells to Syvamo, according to International Paper this is through a strategic contract that the partners have agreed to terminate as of December 31, 2024.
